PROTOTYPE
Disclaimer: This is only a very basic prototype of one of the students' projects for the course "AI, Biopolitics, & Engineered Oppression." The final projects of all the students will be available by the end of May 2026.

ICE + AI Surveillance

From Slave Catchers to Flock Cameras:
The Continuum of American State Violence

▼  SCROLL TO EXPLORE THE RESEARCH FRAMEWORK  ▼

FILE 01

📜 The Historical Continuum

1850s — SLAVE CATCHERS Papers & passes / Physical tracking
Hunting racialized bodies
Protecting "white property"
▼ ▼ ▼
⚠ KEY INSIGHT This isn't Nazi Germany.
This is specifically American violence with roots in slavery.
FILE 02

📜 Escalation Timeline

1950s — OPERATION WETBACK Mass racial roundups / Deportation campaigns
Border militarization begins
▼ ▼ ▼
2008 — SECURE COMMUNITIES Fingerprint databases
ICE access to local arrests
Digital surveillance infrastructure
FILE 03

📷 Present Day: 2025

2025 — AI + FLOCK CAMERAS Real-time facial recognition
License plate tracking
Automated deportation pipeline
No warrants, no consent
◈ SAME LOGIC. BETTER TECHNOLOGY. Each era uses "best available tech" but serves the same purpose: control racialized bodies & protect whiteness as property
FILE 04

🎥 How Flock + ICE Works

01
CITIES BUY CAMERAS $2,500/year each — "For public safety"
02
FLOCK COLLECTS DATA 24/7 License plates · Facial scans · Movement patterns
03
ICE QUERIES DATABASE WITHOUT WARRANTS
04
RAIDS & ARRESTS Person never knew they were tracked
FILE 05

💰 Follow the Money

▲ WHO PROFITS Flock Safety Inc.
Investors (Thiel, Andreessen Horowitz)
Private prison companies
Defense contractors
▼ WHO SUFFERS Immigrant families separated
Communities terrorized
People deported to danger
Children orphaned

This is racial capitalism: profiting from racialized state violence

FILE 08

💡 The Core Argument

✗ COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS "Trump is doing something NEW"
"This is like Nazi Germany"
"Better AI will fix it"
"We just need regulation"
VS.
✓ THE CORRECT FRAMEWORK "America has ALWAYS done this"
"Slave patrols → ICE raids"
"Tech makes it WORSE, not better"
"Must ABOLISH, not reform"

The problem isn't the algorithm's accuracy.
The problem is using ANY technology to hunt and deport people.

FILE 09

✊ Research Action Plan

1. DOCUMENT THE HARM FOIA your city's Flock contracts
Map cameras in immigrant neighborhoods
Count arrests linked to surveillance
Interview people who've been tracked
2. BUILD HISTORICAL ANALYSIS Show continuity: Slave Catchers → ICE
This is AMERICAN violence, not imported
Each era adapts tech to the same purpose
3. CENTER COMMUNITY VOICES Partner with Mijente, UWD, IDP
Don't speak FOR — amplify those targeted
Provide practical resistance tools
4. DEMAND ABOLITION Not "better AI" — NO AI for deportation
Dismantle ICE + surveillance infrastructure
Community safety without state violence
URGENT
FILE 10

🎯 Why This Matters NOW

⚠ URGENT — REAL TIME This is happening NOW.
People are being raided TODAY.
Families are being separated NOW.

Your research isn't just academic.
It can save lives.

Your strongest insight:
Connecting AI surveillance to Slave Catchers.
That's the framework. Build everything from there.

◈ AI SURVEILLANCE = HIGH-TECH SLAVE CATCHING Not a bug. Working as designed.
Must abolish, not reform.

✊  Research with communities, not on them  ✊
